THEME:

Linking Constitutional reform to the Strengthening of our Democracy

NOTES:

  • The theme may be interpreted in its broadest sense.
  • The writer may examine any aspect of the Independence Constitution and make suggestions for its improvement and/or strengthening.
  • The song should be inspirational, a call to action to reflect on Grenada’s democracy and the positive steps to be taken to preserve and enhance it.
 

RULES:

  1. The competition is opened to ALL Grenadian citizens.
  2. Competitors wishing to participate must register specifically for this competition with the Grenada Carnival Committee (GCC).
  3. The deadline for registration and the submission of CD’s is 4 PM on Friday, July 8th 2011.
  4. An artiste may enter ONLY one (1) song in the competition.
  5. The song to be performed must be original and not in violation of any intellectual property law or convention and shall not have been published or sung in competition prior to the 9th day of August 2010.
  6. The competition will consist of one (1) round but two modes of adjudication
    1. Preliminary adjudication will take place on CD’s and will account for eighty percent (80%) of an artiste’s final score.
    2. Partnering radio stations will submit a log of the airplay received by the competing songs between July 8th 2011 and August 3rd 2011. This compilation of the song’s rotation on national radio will account for twenty percent (20%) of an artiste’s final score.
  7. The competition will be adjudicated by judges contracted by the GCC.
    1. The preliminary Judging Panel will consist of no less than three (3) Judges.
  8. Songs will be judged on Lyrics, Melody, Originality and Performance.
    1. Preliminaries: Lyrics (40 Points), Melody (30 Points), Rendition (15 Points) & Originality (15 Points).
  9. Definitions of the adjudication criterion will be available at the GCC Secretariat and online at www.spicemasgrenada.com
  10. The official results and performance of the winning song will take place at Dimanche Gras, Sunday, August 7.
 

JUDGING CRITERIA:

  • Songs will be judged on Lyrics, Melody, Originality and Performance.
    • Preliminaries: Lyrics (40 Points), Melody (30 Points), Rendition (15 Points) & Originality (15 Points).
    • Semifinal and Final [if applicable]: Lyrics (40 Points), Melody (30 Points), Performance (20 Points) & Originality (10 Points).

Lyrics:

  1. Expression of the stated theme: use of theme to strengthen Grenada’s democracy
  2. Theme Development: consistent, logically developed, message from introduction to conclusion demonstrating depth (research)
  3. Poetic Structure/Word Craft: strength of words/effective use of figures of speech/imagery
  4. Creativity: unusually interesting interpretation and/or effective incorporation of local colour

Melody:

  1. Melodic Structure: distinct beginning, peak, use of intervals, codas and chord progression
  2. Tunefulness: sweetness of sound, catchiness/freshness, mood and marriage to message
  3. Variation in Melodic Lines: consistency, fluidity
  4. Rhythm & Tempo: unpredictability, avoidance of repetition

Originality

  1. Treatment of Theme: unique interpretation and development of song
  2. Melody: creative use of melodic lines/arrangement
  3. Lyrics: Style, concept message

Performance = Rendition and Presentation
Rendition:

  1. Is the song a calypso?
  2. Effective use of voice to communicate the meaning of the song: tone, mood, intonation
  3. Diction: pronunciation, enunciation, fluency
  4. Rhythm: accurate timing, rapport between band and singer, adherence to key

Presentation:

  1. Use of the body to convey the meaning of the song: facial expression, gestures, etc
  2. Use of Stage
  3. Use of microphone
  4. Appropriate use of Props
