The Spicemas Corporation is a statutory body created by an act of parliament. The Corporation is responsible for promoting and organizing Grenada’s Carnival “Spicemas” and all official Spicemas events.

The Corporation plays a crucial role in ensuring the success and smooth execution of Grenada's Carnival celebrations. With its expertise and resources, the Corporation actively works towards creating a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere that showcases the rich cultural heritage of the island. Additionally, it collaborates with various stakeholders to attract both locals and tourists, making Spicemas a truly unforgettable experience for all.

While several Caribbean countries celebrate Carnival, Spicemas must be seen as a Cultural festival unique to Grenada, especially for its J’ouvert, Traditional Mas and Monday Nite Mas, which are definite stand-outs when compared to other Caribbean islands.  It is a compelling expression of Caribbean culture and Street Theatre through music, dance, entertainment and cuisine, and of significant importance, all of these comes together and are enjoyed in a ‘safe crime free’ environment amongst hospitable people.

    Monday, August 12th 2024

    Jouvert is a lively and colourful street party that is part of the Carnival celebrations in Grenada. “Jouvert” is derived from the French word “jour ouvert,” which means daybreak or morning. The event occurs in the early morning, often before dawn and lasting until sunrise.

    During Jouvert, there is often music, including the traditional sounds of steel drums and calypso, as well as more contemporary Caribbean music genres like soca and reggae. Participants and onlookers enjoy the music and dancing, creating community and celebration.

    One distinctive feature of Jouvert is oil, paint or mud.

    The traditional Jab-Jab bands emerge from the darkness of the night to parade freely through the town.”
    Blackened with stale molasses, tar, grease, creosote or mud and wearing little more than their horned helmets, these masqueraders in previous times set out to terrify onlookers with their grotesque appearance and repulsive dances.

    Fancy Mas

    Also known as Pretty Mas’ is a vibrant and elaborate display of creativity and artistry, where the costumes often feature intricate beadwork, feathers, and dazzling embellishments. The Traditional Mas players add an authentic cultural touch to the parade, showcasing the rich heritage and history of the region through their unique characters and performances.

    Children’s Carnival Frolic

    Children’s Carnival Frolic is a Festival designed for the younger generation of Grenada, ranging from the ages 3 to 16. It embeds all the elements of Mas and pageantry, designed specifically to facilitate the kids. The event features vibrant costumes, lively music, and exciting dance routines that showcase the creativity and talent of the young participants. It provides a safe and inclusive environment for children to express themselves and celebrate their culture during the Carnival season.

    A parade of lights, held on Carnival Monday Night where spectators gather on the streets of St. George’s waiting to be entertained by thousands of masqueraders enjoying themselves whilst chipping down the streets to some of the local Soca music, in their neon and brightly colored garments and lighting instruments

    Soca Monarch

    Soca Monarch is the annual soca music competition, the finals of which are held on Carnival Friday. Contestants in the event vie for two separate crowns or titles, the Soca Monarch (aka the Power Soca Monarch) for uptempo songs (135 bpm and above), and Groovy Soca Monarch for slower-paced songs (134 bpm and below). The Soca Monarch competition has become one of the most anticipated events for Grenada’s Carnival over the years.

    Held on the Saturday before Carnival, the Panorama Competition is another significant feature of Grenada’s Carnival. Panorama is an annual music competition for conventional steel bands, where up to 100 musicians rhythmically beat their pan sticks against the steelpans to create infectious music that seems to fuel the desire to dance.

    Dimanche Gras

    Dimanche Gras is French for Great Sunday and is the title of the main carnival event called Dimanche Gras Night. On Dimanche Gras which is carnival Sunday night, the calypso competition and the King and Queen of the Bands are held. It is a spectacle to begin the carnival on Monday morning (J’ouvert).

    Spicemas Launch Grenada

    Traditional mas Festival

    The Carnival devils disappear with the rising of the sun, making way for the Traditional and Fancy Mas bands in the Monday parade or Pageant.

    Each parish has its own brand of traditional mas, usually represented by Short Knees, Veiux Corp and Wild Indians. These traditional mas bands showcase vibrant costumes and energetic dance routines that reflect the rich cultural heritage of Grenada. Additionally, the Fancy Mas bands add a touch of glamour and creativity to the parade with their elaborate and intricately designed costumes, captivating the young participants and spectators alike.

    National Carnival Queen Pageant

    The National Carnival Queen Show is the stage where Grenada’s young women compete for the title of Carnival Queen. Showcasing the beauty, talent, and intelligence of 7 contestants representing their parish as they compete in various categories to win the Crown and Title of Miss Grenada.
