Calypso Tents Judging

The Calypso Tent Judging provides Calypso artists with an important platform to step onto the carnival stage and present their latest compositions in the hopes of earning a place on the Dimanche Gras stage. Similar to the Soca and Groovy Prelims, the judging process gives artists an opportunity to showcase their performance ability and lyrical expression before a live audience and a panel of judges.

Calypso, however, carries a unique role within the carnival tradition. Beyond its rhythm and entertainment value, the genre has long provided a space for social commentary. Through clever lyrics, wit, satire, and storytelling, Calypso artists bring attention to the realities affecting our communities, shining a light on difficult conversations that can often be overlooked in our day-to-day lives.

The artists used their performances to challenge audiences to listen, think, question, and engage. In doing so, they demonstrated the true power of music as an art form; one that can entertain while also provoking thought and encouraging us to step outside of our comfort zones.

Across their respective tents, the Calypsonians embraced this responsibility, delivering performances that reminded audiences of the enduring relationship between music, culture, and society. Their songs reflected the changing times while remaining firmly rooted in the traditions that have shaped Calypso over generations.

The Calypso Tent Judging therefore represents more than a competition for a place on the Dimanche Gras stage. It is a celebration of Grenada’s Calypso tradition and its role as a voice for the people. As the genre continues to evolve, these artists remind us that while the sound and style of music may change, the roots of our cultural traditions remain firmly planted.
